This book was exactly what I needed when I wanted something lighter than what I had been plowing through all year, but wasn't up for a time-wasting or soul-sucking novel. A friend said, "You need Wodehouse." I've heard that he's great, but I felt like the reviews must have been exagerrating how funny/witty/talented he was. Nope. He really is all that you could ask for in a writer. There are so many moments where he has the insights of the obvious greats, like Dickens/Austen, but so much light and joy in his work that he really is in his own league. There are stories that just get better and better as you go, something that seems implausible except that it's actually happening. He's one of those writers where I just have to wonder how he got to be such a talent.Product details

I picked up this classic from P G Wodehouse purely based on his authorship and he has stood true to his reputation. Book is collection of interesting, humorous and sensitive stories from various angles - all somehow connected to theatrical circle. BILL THE BLOODHOUND is by far the most hilarious story in the collection where a below-average detective falls in love with a drama girl. MIXER stories are unique by nature of being narrated from point of view of a dog. AT GEISENHEIMER is very sensitive and has good climax. SEA OF TROUBLES had good start but frizzled end. And titled story MAN WITH TWO LEFT FEET is romantic with sensitive end.
I had heard of PG Wodehouse but never read anything by him before. I couldn't resist the price of this on (free) so I decided to give it a try. The stories were a welcome relief from some of the more depressing literature I have been reading. Most were set in Britain, some in NYC, and all in the earlier part of the 20th century, with no mention of wars, poverty, real suffering, etc. The stories were rather short, fluffy, and came to a happy conclusion for the most part. The satire was very gentle and good-natured. One of the most amusing stories was told from the point of view of a dog.
What a great find to discover P.G. Wodehouse among the dross of self-published e-books!
This collection of short stories shows Wodehouse at his best. For the most part, the endings can be guessed early on and there are many references, slang terms and concepts mentioned that are so outdated as to be incomprehensible to modern readers. Doesn't matter. Wodehouse's deft and clever wording added to his puckish sense of humor give the stories their charm and make them enjoyable to read.
The variety of points of view makes each story unique. The lead character may be male or female, wealthy or poor, or--in my favorites--a dog.
I'm keeping this book.
I had never read a Jeeves-less Wodehouse book before, but I will again as soon as I can. All the stories were good reads, and sly morality tales as well. There's something worth learning from each. My personal favorite was the one which looked at the training of a hard-luck puppy from the viewpoint of the puppy. The moral of the story none of us chooses the circumstances of our birth so none of us has a right to blame the victim of unfortunate circumstances.
Granted I can surfeit myself on it now and again but he never really fails. I think I may have really started to enjoy him watching Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie's version. I can't read a Jeeves and Wooster now without seeing their expressions as I read. A wonderful world to live in. Never any problems of a serious nature. No social realities. Wonder if the author lived on that world all his life. I suppose not. But it's enjoyable to visit now and again.
Perhaps no one said it better and with more prescient insight than Evelyn Waugh about Wodehouse i.e. he never tasted the forbidden fruit. This collection while making very entertaining reading is very clever and comic but is so one dimensional that the characters cease to live in the reader's imagination once the tome is closed.
Of course that is the charm of Wodehouse and the key to his popularity. You will laugh and gambol in a world that will never, ever, trouble. It is almost escapist entertainment in the sense that whatever happens to the characters, nothing bad or uncomfortable will happen.
Of course he is a master wordsmith and if you want to appreciate his skill you should read his interview in the Paris Review where he calmly and sucinctly discusses what he feels is the key to comic writing e.g. the beginning paragraph. It is more interesting to get a sense of his world, if what he says is true. If it is unpleasant it does not exist. Perhaps the adage "when conflict ends, life ends," did not apply to him.
A mixed bag of shorts. Some only so-so, but others terrific. Hard to pick a favorite. "At Geisenheimer's" is a lovely story with a terrific twist at the end, "The Extricating of Gussie" is one of the best of the Jeeves and Wooster stories, and "The Mixer" is a clever pair of stories told from the dog's point of view. None of the others is quite as good, but not one is bad, either. I read the whole collection right through, then re-read it before the night was over, to savor the best bits. Even if you have to pay for it, it's worth a look; and as a public domain work it's a steal,
